  • The day is suitable for complete beginners or the experienced artist.
  • South Elephant Wood provides a unique and beautiful venue for making art.
  • During your day at the woods you will be expertly tutored through an innovative project, so that at the end you will take away with you a piece of your work, created by your artistic endeavours.
  • The group is small and friendly, made up of no more than 10 people plus us, with lots of one-to-one tuition.

What will the lunch be like?
Lunch is set so that we can all sit together at one table and in contrast to the setting it is served on china plates with proper cutlery, glasses, napkins etc. A typical menu would be, home made vegetable stew served with home baked bread and soda loaf, strawberries and cream followed by a selection of cheeses.

What sort of project will we be doing?
The project will vary on each date.  Inspiration is taken from the setting and nature.  Projects are painting based and most will be done on box canvas with acrylic; but there will be the option of exploring mixed media.  See examples of work below.

Essential Information

How to get there: South Elephant Wood is located on the B2244, 0.8 miles north of the road bridge at the Cripps Corner junction. The nearest registered postcode is TN32 5SH. The entrance to the wood is in a lay-by which will be marked in both directions by ‘Art’ signs. Drive up the track from the lay-by, the parking area is just 100 yards up on the right. Try to park as neatly as possible.
This is not a very big car park but there should be room for all of you. Click here to go to map
If you are coming from a distance away there are lots of good Bed and Breakfasts locally. We can recommend Kester House in Sedlescombe.

Be prepared:
The woods are a wild and natural space so you need to be aware that the ground will be uneven, it may be muddy. There are likely to be insects that bite or sting. It could be rather hot or a bit cool and it might rain. The workshop area is covered but please dress appropriately; we would recommend trousers, strong shoes and something with long sleeves to cover up if needed and other layers to suit all weathers.
Everything else you need for the day will be provided: Art materials, food and drink.
Additional canvases and a range of art materials will also be on sale.

Your day at South Elephant Wood:
We will meet in the parking area 9.45am for a 10am start. From the car park we will take a short walk through the woods to the workshop area – The Clearing.
We will talk you through and give a demonstration of the day’s project. Whether you are a complete novice who last put paint to paper at school or someone who has mastered the art but want to explore something different this day will gently guide you through the project or allow you to develop the project in your own way.
During the morning and afternoon there will be a break with refreshments; at lunch we will all sit together to enjoy a sociable meal. The day will end around 4.00pm.
